We've considered adding acceptance of credit cards. This would, of course mean paying either a fixed fee or a percentage of each charge or both, but it could be the difference in making a small- to medium-size project (or those wonderful project add-ons) desirable to a client.
Since we expect that the number of credit card transactions/month would seldom be high, it's important to find a credit card processor that would not charge any monthly or annual fee, but only take its commissions.
Also, those processing companies I've talked to insist on us getting a dial-up card terminal, yet I'd prefer doing everything via the Internet. So far, only PayPal (part of eBay) seems to allow this, but their costs to me seem excessive.
Comments? Suggestions? Specific recommendations?

Intuit offers a credit card payment service that you can use on your smart phone. You do not have to buy other equipment although they do offer a small card reader if you want one. The fees are reasonable. However, they have a monthly $20 minimum for charge fees. Depending on the job it may or may not be worth it to have $240 a year in fees. On the flip side... How many more jobs would you get if you offered credit card payment?
