When i started as an apprentice 12 years ago, I only had a few good teachers and mentors around to look up to. And one thing which got me into the trades was seeing that the industry needed some skilled workers. I knew that if i became good at it big money would come my way. I was right about that, and now that I am looking to train others from the new generation coming up, I am left wondering where are all the skilled tradesman and builders?. So many guys retiring, but not enough coming into the trade. Its hard to find good help these days, and harder to find a good sub contractor.

Sadly enough, this has been coming for a long time. The current generation of kids in the US, for the most part, do not think they need to work hard to succeed. They are correct in that they have not had to work hard in the past; the level of entitled attitude is high at all levels of employment and education.

NAHB saw this coming in the 80's and launched a bunch of training opportunities; they could not fill the spots. Nobody wanted to work with their hands, get dirty, work in the weather, etc. The immigrant workers made up for this shortage in the recent past in the semi-skilled areas (e.g.,framing, masonry) but the areas requiring state license are going to be in huge shortage soon...maybe plumbers will make more than doctors soon..that would be amusing..
